R&D as a Service

Deep tech claims are easy to make.

Independent R&D that tells you whether they hold.

ALPHA-AQAL puts a senior physicist on your hardest technical question, on demand. Feasibility studies, technical due diligence and fractional R&D leadership for deep tech founders, investors and engineering teams, without building a research department first.

Problem

Most deep tech risk is technical, and it surfaces late.

Claims nobody has checked

Pitch decks and grant applications rest on physics, chemistry or algorithms that no independent scientist has reviewed.

Investors without a lab

Funds and angels have to judge hardware, materials and quantum claims with no in-house scientist to test them.

A full R&D team, hired too early

Recruiting a head of research before the core risk is retired spends runway on the wrong questions.

Problems that cross disciplines

Real projects span semiconductors, materials, software and biology. Single-domain consultants cover one slice of them.

Services

Five ways to bring in a research lead.

Each engagement is scoped and priced before work starts. Most clients begin with a Feasibility Sprint and decide what comes next from its verdict.

Fixed price

Feasibility Sprint

A scoped study that answers one question: can this work, and what would it take? Literature, first-principles analysis and simulation where the question needs it.

You receive
A written verdict (go, go with conditions, or no-go), a risk register and the next experiments to run.
Per deal

Technical Due Diligence

An independent read of a startup's core technology before you invest. Claims are checked against physics, prior art and the data the team can show.

You receive
A diligence memo with red flags, open risks and the questions to put to the founders.
Monthly retainer

Fractional Head of R&D

Ongoing research leadership: specification reviews, a verdict gate on every major step, and execution of the analysis pipeline. Tools and compute are passed through at cost.

You receive
A research lead for a fraction of a full-time hire, with decisions documented as you go.
Per funding call

Grant & Proposal Support

Technical sections, work packages and feasibility arguments for research and innovation funding applications.

You receive
Submission-ready technical content, with the science checked by someone who has done the research.
Custom

Tailored Technical Training

Courses built around a team's exact instruments and questions, delivered on site or remotely. A recent example is a five-day Keysight B1500A / EasyEXPERT course for a university in Kuwait.

You receive
A course designed for your people, your equipment and the measurements you actually need.

Method

AI-assisted research, verified by a physicist at every step.

  1. Scope

One call to define the question, the decision it informs and what counts as an answer. Scope and price are fixed before work starts.

  2. Library

Papers, patents, datasheets and standards relevant to the question are gathered into a project library.

  3. Analysis

Specialised AI agents run literature synthesis, calculations and simulations. Defined sub-tasks go to vetted specialists when the field demands it.

  4. Verdict gate

Every step is reviewed and either approved or sent back. Nothing reaches you that has not been checked by hand.

  5. Report

A written verdict you can put in front of a board, an investment committee or a grant panel.

Confidential data

When your data must not reach third-party services, the analysis runs on a local AI setup that works entirely offline.

Figures

The material behind the verdicts.

Reference imagery from the fields ALPHA-AQAL works in, from the die to the data. Client results stay confidential.

About

Dr. Mohamed Aouad

Physicist and deep tech consultant. My PhD on FDSOI semiconductor devices was carried out at CEA-Leti with Université Grenoble Alpes, on device physics and compact modelling down to cryogenic temperatures.

Since then I have worked as an innovation consultant and, since 2025, as an independent scientific consultant on projects ranging from materials and quantum technologies to biomedical devices and finance. I am also a trained full-stack developer, which is why the analysis pipelines behind ALPHA-AQAL are built in-house.
